JetBlue Mint vs United Polaris: which is better across the Atlantic?
A door is easy to photograph. A good night’s sleep—and a sensible journey to the airport—takes a little more comparison.

Choose Mint for a private suite on a convenient nonstop; choose Polaris when the complete United itinerary and lounge access work better. Compare the actual fare tier: the cheapest Mint and Polaris options can leave out the lounge you expected.
01Start with the flight you can actually use.

For a US traveller heading to Europe, JetBlue Mint and United Polaris can both deliver the most important upgrade over economy: a place to lie flat overnight. The choice becomes interesting once you compare the specific seat, departure airport, fare tier and time left for sleep. Mint is particularly appealing when a nonstop from your home airport offers a private suite at a price you like. Polaris becomes compelling when United’s complete itinerary saves a connection, offers a useful onward flight or includes a lounge you will have time to enjoy.
| Question | JetBlue Mint Suite | United Polaris |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy | A closing door on A321LR/neo Mint Suites | Conventional Polaris pods are open; check the exact aircraft and product |
| Airport experience | BlueHouse at eligible gateways and fare levels | United Club and Polaris Lounge have different eligibility |
| Long-haul connection | Check the complete itinerary you can book | A convenient hub itinerary may outweigh a seat preference |
| Best reason to pay more | A suite on the nonstop you want | A better whole journey, with benefits you will actually use |
This comparison concerns the newer Mint Suites used for transatlantic flying and conventional Polaris seats, rather than treating every aircraft in either fleet as identical. Classic Mint has a different mix of paired seats and individual suites. Newer United products also need their own seat check. A cabin name is the beginning of the search, not the final specification.

03Mint’s door is a benefit; the shape of the bed still matters.

The newer Mint Suite gives each passenger direct aisle access and a door. Mint Studio adds a larger space at the front of the cabin, including a guest seat. Those features make Mint attractive if visual privacy is high on your list. But a door does not tell you how easily your feet move in bed mode, where you place a laptop during dinner or whether the cushion suits you for six hours.
For Polaris, inspect the seat in the aircraft you are booking. The familiar 787 and 777 layout has individual pods with direct aisle access, while positions within that layout can feel different. A bulkhead footwell may suit someone who dislikes a confined sleeping position; another traveller may prefer being farther from a busy galley. Treat photographs of the exact row as useful evidence, rather than assuming the headline seat pitch answers those questions.
Frequent Miler’s London–Boston Mint review is useful precisely because it praises some details while questioning others: the storage and service sit alongside comments about a firm bed and the recline transition. The Alviator’s JFK–Heathrow report describes a substituted non-LR A321neo and a suite door that remained open on that flight. These are individual experiences, not fleet-wide failure rates. They help identify what to examine before choosing a seat.
04A shorter flight can leave very little time to use the bed.
On an eastbound overnight flight, start with the scheduled journey and then separate it from your likely sleep opportunity. Suppose an illustrative seven-hour flight includes 45 minutes before the first meal starts, 75 minutes for dinner and settling down, and an hour for breakfast and arrival preparation. That leaves about four hours for sleep. This is a planning example, not a service timetable for either airline.
If sleep is the main reason to buy business class, a good dinner before boarding can be worth more than a marginally larger screen. Decide whether you want the full onboard meal or would rather get comfortable quickly. A lounge can support that plan, but only when your ticket includes it and you arrive early enough to use it. Adding a connection solely to obtain a favourite suite can erase the time and energy the bed was supposed to preserve.
A westbound daytime journey creates a different decision. You may spend more time using the table, watching films and eating, so storage, seat controls and the overall cabin experience receive more weight. It is reasonable to favour one airline eastbound and another westbound if the fares and booking conditions work. You do not need one universal winner for both directions.

- Mint Base
- No BlueHouse access
- Mint / Mint Flex
- Eligible gateway access
- Polaris
- Base differs from standard / flexible
JetBlue announced BlueHouse access for eligible departing Mint and Mint Flex customers alongside the August 2026 Boston opening. Its new Mint Base tier excludes lounge access and advance seat selection. When that tier appears in your search, do not transfer an old “Mint includes everything” assumption into the booking. BlueHouse is a gateway benefit; it is not a promise of a JetBlue lounge at every European airport.
United also distinguishes its fare levels. Its lounge-access page lists United Club access for Polaris Base, standard and flexible fares, but reserves Polaris Lounge access for standard and flexible Polaris fares. A United Club is not the same product as a Polaris Lounge with its dining and rest facilities. Compare the lounge you can enter on your specific itinerary, including a connection or arrival where eligible.
| Fare check | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|
| Mint Base versus Mint/Mint Flex | A lower fare can leave out BlueHouse and advance seat selection |
| Polaris Base versus standard/flexible | United Club access does not establish Polaris Lounge access |
| Time at the gateway | A useful lounge is worth less if a tight connection leaves no time |
| Return journey | Check the departure airport’s actual facility; do not assume symmetry |
Price the benefits you would otherwise buy. If you already have a satisfactory way to eat and work at the airport, the lounge difference may be modest. If you plan to shower, dine and board ready to sleep, it may be central. Avoid assigning a generic dollar value to a lounge visit without relating it to your schedule.
06JFK versus Newark can matter more than the door.

- Mint fare saving
- 2 × US$250 = US$500
- Extra ground costs
- US$160 for the couple
- Remaining saving
- US$340, plus extra travel time
For New York travellers, compare the journey to JFK with the journey to Newark from your actual starting point. Include the transport you would use, the margin you need and the return trip home. A fare that looks lower can lose its advantage after extra ground costs or an inconvenient arrival. The same reasoning applies to travellers connecting from another US city: measure the whole itinerary, not just the Atlantic sector.
Imagine Mint is US$250 cheaper per person, but the airport choice adds US$160 in total ground costs for two travellers and requires an extra hour in each direction. The couple saves US$340 after those transport costs. That may still be an excellent trade. The calculation simply makes the saving and the extra time visible. These figures are hypothetical, so replace them with your actual transport options.
For a connection, distinguish a through ticket from separate bookings. Compare the transfer airport, connection time, baggage arrangements and what the fare says about changes. A preferred seat on a separately booked long-haul flight can be a poor fit if the domestic feeder leaves little margin. Conversely, a comfortable nonstop from home can justify paying more than a superficially cheaper hub connection.
07Make the shortlist about your trip, then choose the seat.

Keep a small comparison with five entries: complete cash price, exact cabin product, fare tier, lounge entitlement and usable rest time. If using points, add the programme, total points and cash payment, and the conditions of the ticket you are actually booking. Do not assume that an old review’s redemption price or upgrade certificate remains available.
Our preference is Mint when the newer suite is on a convenient nonstop and the included benefits suit the trip. Polaris wins when its itinerary and eligible lounge access produce a better travel day, particularly around a connection. If you are mostly buying sleep, let the timings and bed shape decide; if you are treating the flight as part of the holiday, give privacy, dining and time in the cabin more weight. The better business class is the one whose advantages you have time to use.
