KrisFlyer stopovers: when Saver, Advantage or Access makes sense

Two nights in Singapore can change which award works. Start with the stopover rules, then compare miles and cash for the complete trip.

A one-way Saver has no complimentary stopover. A return Saver has one; Advantage and Access allow one on a one-way or two on a return. The maximum is 30 days per stopover.

01A two-night visit is a stopover, not a long connection.

Imagine travelling from London to Sydney via Singapore and wanting two nights in the city. That pause is part of the holiday, so it needs to fit the award’s stopover rules. Singapore Airlines defines a stopover as 24 hours or more between flights. A short overnight connection and a two-night city visit therefore do not always price the same way.

The useful distinction is the direction of travel as well as the award type. A return Saver may already provide the one stop you need. On a one-way journey, moving to a different award type—or booking separate awards—becomes part of the calculation. Do not buy more flexibility simply because your trip contains the word “stopover”.

02Compare the entire journey in three versions.

First search your preferred dates as a through journey. Then compare the version with the Singapore stop, and finally two separate awards. Record total miles, total cash and the cabin on every flight. Looking only at the long-haul sector can make an apparently attractive redemption more expensive once the second flight is added.

Saver requires fewer miles when available, while Advantage offers a different availability and flexibility trade-off. Access pricing responds to demand and is not covered by the standard award calculator in the same way. That makes the actual booking quote more useful than a remembered mileage figure from someone else’s trip.

03Put a personal price on the extra miles.

Extra miles need a useful return. Through award example: 100,000 miles + £180. Stop-compatible example: 120,000 miles + £180. Personal valuation: 20,000 × 1p = £200

Suppose a hypothetical through award costs 100,000 miles plus £180, while a version that fits your stop costs 120,000 miles plus £180. If you personally value those extra 20,000 miles at 1p each, the stopover-compatible option has an additional opportunity cost of £200. This is not a KrisFlyer fare quote or a universal mileage valuation; it is a way to compare your own live options.

Now include what the alternative would cost: a separate onward ticket, any different taxes, and the flexibility you need. Hotel nights in Singapore belong in the holiday budget whichever ticket structure you use. Keeping the flight comparison separate from the city-break spending helps reveal whether you are paying extra for the award rules or for the visit itself.

04The old paid-stopover shortcut no longer applies.

KrisFlyer limits a complimentary stopover to 30 days. Its terms also removed the paid-stopover option for tickets issued from 1 August 2022. An older guide describing a small fee to add a stopover to a one-way Saver should therefore not be the basis of a new booking.

If your stay exceeds the permitted duration, price separate redemptions. For shorter stays, check that the complete itinerary is a permitted route and has seats available in the cabins you want. A stopover allowance does not make every routing bookable. Once the flights work, decide whether you are staying airside for a connection or entering Singapore for a visit; our Changi guide covers the airport side of that choice.
