ANA miles for one-way flights: ANA and partner awards are different searches

One-way awards make a trip easier to assemble. They do not turn every flight booked with ANA miles into the same award product.

Choose the operating airline first, then the correct ANA Mileage Club award chart. ANA-operated and partner awards have different rules, even when the miles come from the same account.

01You no longer need to build the whole return trip at once

ANA introduced one-way international awards for reservations and tickets issued from 24 June 2025, including eligible partner awards. Older guides that insist on a return booking can therefore send you down the wrong path. A one-way search lets you solve the outbound journey without first finding a matching return seat.

That is useful when the dates are flexible in one direction, when you return from a different city, or when the best return option is a cash ticket. It does not mean you should book the outbound without examining the rest of the trip. Price a realistic return before committing miles, especially if the travel dates are fixed.

02A partner flight needs the partner rules

Suppose you are comparing an ANA-operated flight to Tokyo with a partner-operated alternative. The miles live in the same ANA account, but the itinerary must be evaluated under the appropriate rules. Do not take a low-season ANA figure and apply it to another airline simply because both appear in an award search.

For ANA-operated travel, the date’s seasonal band can make a meaningful difference. For a partner award, changing the date may help you find availability without creating an ANA low-season price. These are two distinct reasons to be flexible. Keeping them separate makes the calendar search much easier to interpret.

03Premium economy is an easy place to choose the wrong search

If premium economy is your target, the distinction is particularly useful. ANA’s partner award rules do not offer that cabin. Seeing a partner aircraft with premium-economy seats is therefore not evidence that ANA miles can book those seats as a partner award.

Instead of repeating a search that cannot produce the desired cabin, decide whether you want an ANA-operated premium-economy award, a partner business award, or a cash premium-economy fare. Those alternatives have different costs and availability. The best one may change between the outbound and return.

04Keep four figures together when comparing awards

Four figures beside every award. Points + cash: Keep both payment amounts. Whole journey: Time and cabin on every sector. Everyone travelling: Required seats must be bookable

Record the miles, the cash payment, the total journey time and the cabin on each sector. An award with fewer miles can include a less convenient connection or a short sector in a different cabin. An attractive chart number is only a starting point until you have found bookable seats for the required travellers.

For two people, search for two seats from the beginning. Finding one seat on several dates does not establish a two-person trip. If only the outbound is available, compare the real cost of the remaining journey before treating the award as a saving. This is where one-way flexibility helps: you can combine sensible options without forcing every flight into one programme.
