Moving Avios between British Airways and Qatar: compare before you transfer
The currency travels between accounts. The flight’s availability and the rules of the booking still need a separate comparison.

Find the award you want in the programme you intend to book through, compare the complete cost, then move the Avios you need. Linking accounts does not reserve a flight.
01Moving points and booking a seat are different actions
British Airways and Qatar Airways allow members to link their own eligible loyalty accounts and move Avios between them. Qatar describes the transfer as instant and free. This is a way to position your balance for a booking, not a way to create award availability. A seat still has to be available through the programme issuing the ticket.
Start by signing into the programme where you are considering the award. Search the actual date, route, cabin and number of passengers. A headline showing a starting price is not the same as a bookable itinerary for your party. Keeping this order avoids moving points simply because a general redemption example looks attractive.

02Compare the complete ticket, not just the Avios number
Read the diagram as text
- Avios
- Required for every traveller and sector
- Cash
- Taxes, carrier charges and fees
- Flexibility
- Change and cancellation terms
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Avios required | The headline points cost is only one part of the price |
| Taxes and other cash charges | A lower points price can still require more cash |
| Operating airline and cabin on every sector | A connection can contain a different aircraft or class |
| Change and cancellation conditions | The issuing programme’s rules govern the award |
| Seats available for the whole party | One seat is not a two-person holiday |
Put the two options beside each other using the same dates and passengers. If one option has a longer connection, include the airport time in your comparison. If the cash currencies differ, compare them on a consistent basis. There is no need to attach a universal cash value to every Avios to see which itinerary better fits your trip.
Also distinguish the airline operating the flight from the programme issuing the award. A Qatar flight and a Qatar-issued ticket are not the same description. When you later need to change the booking, knowing where it was issued is more useful than knowing which aircraft will operate it.
03Move only what the chosen booking needs
Consider an illustrative balance of 50,000 Avios with BA and 30,000 with Qatar. Moving 20,000 from BA to Qatar leaves 30,000 and 50,000 respectively; the combined total remains 80,000. The transfer changes where the points sit, not how many you own. This example is balance arithmetic, not an award-price quote.
Linking the accounts in advance can help you discover a profile or sign-in problem before a useful award appears. Follow the official linking flow and complete its identity and security checks. Once you have chosen a flight, recheck the live price and availability before moving the required balance and proceeding to booking.
04The confirmation you need is a ticket confirmation
A successful transfer message proves that the Avios moved. It does not prove that the flight was reserved or ticketed. After completing an award booking, check the itinerary, passenger names, cabin on each sector and ticket confirmation. Save the booking under the programme that issued it so you know where to manage it.
For a Qsuite trip, there is one more independent check: the exact cabin. A Qatar business-class award does not automatically mean Qsuite. The same separation applies to BA Club Suite. Points, ticket rules and seat hardware are three parts of the decision, and a good booking gets all three right.
