EVA Air premium economy: the new 787-9 seat versus the 777
Four extra inches of pitch tell only part of the story. The more useful question is how the seat moves—and whether that cabin is on your flight.

Look for the three-class 787-9 and its 28-seat, 2-3-2 premium cabin. A Dreamliner aircraft label alone does not identify the new product.
01The upgrade is about movement as well as space.

EVA’s newer premium economy cabin takes a different approach to reclining. On the three-class 787-9, the cushion moves forward and upward as the seat reclines, supporting a more cradled posture. That matters more than the word “new”: it changes how your body settles into the seat and how much space the movement asks of the person behind you.
| Feature | Three-class 787-9 | 777-300ER |
|---|---|---|
| Seat pitch | 42 inches | 38 inches |
| Premium cabin layout | 2-3-2; 28 seats | 2-4-2 |
| Recline design | Cradle motion | Conventional reclining seat |
| Personal screen | 15.6 inches | 11 inches |
Pitch is not a measurement of clear knee room. The four-inch increase is about 10cm between corresponding points on successive rows; cushions, seatbacks and recline all affect the space you actually use. Treat it as a useful clue, then look at the seat mechanism rather than expecting 10cm of empty space directly in front of your knees.

03Seven seats across changes the family calculation.

For a couple, both cabins offer pairs beside the windows. The more interesting difference is in the middle: three seats on the 787 versus four on the 777. A party of three can occupy a complete centre group on the new aircraft. A party of four may prefer a full centre block on the 777, especially when staying together matters more than the newer seat.
Solo travellers should compare the actual seats still available, too. A newer cabin with only middle seats remaining may be a weaker fit than an aisle seat on the 777. Make that comparison before paying a fare difference; the aircraft name does not tell you which seat you will be able to select.
04A better recliner still answers a different need from a bed.

The new seat adds privacy panels at head level and a larger entertainment screen. Those are practical benefits for reading, watching films and resting upright. If you spend most of a daytime flight awake, these are precisely the hours when a premium economy upgrade can be useful.
For an overnight journey, ask a harder question: do you sleep reasonably well in a recliner? Neither product is a lie-flat bed. If lying flat is essential, compare business-class prices before spending heavily to move from one premium economy product to another. If a recliner works for you, the extra pitch and cradle movement are much more relevant.
05Check every sector, not just the long-haul aircraft.

Start with the cabin offered for your date, then open the seat map. The new configuration has 28 premium economy seats in a 2-3-2 layout. EVA explicitly describes the product as available on certain 787-9 aircraft, so “787-9” by itself is not enough.
On a connecting itinerary through Taipei, read the cabin shown for each sector. A long-haul premium economy ticket can include a shorter flight in another cabin when the onward aircraft does not offer the same product. Compare total price, the seat you can select, connection time and the cabin on each leg together. The best upgrade is one you will actually use across your journey.
