United Premium Plus vs Delta Premium Select: which upgrade fits your trip?

Both buy a better recliner, not a bed. The aircraft, the fare conditions and the timing of your flight can matter more than a small difference in seat measurements.

For a daytime flight, choose the better schedule and the seat pair you can actually reserve. For an overnight flight, decide whether you can sleep in a recliner at all. Neither Premium Plus nor Premium Select is a substitute for a flat Business bed.

01The name of the aircraft belongs beside the name of the cabin

Premium Plus is a separate United cabin; it is not Economy Plus, which provides extra legroom within Economy. Delta Premium Select is likewise different from Delta Comfort. Confusing those names is a more consequential booking mistake than choosing one premium-economy brand over the other.

Examples covered by the linked firsthand reports; layouts are not universal across either fleet.

A smaller number of seats across does not automatically prove a wider seat: the fuselage itself also changes. For a couple, the useful question is whether an available pair fits your preference. For a solo traveller, an aisle in one aircraft can be more attractive than a middle seat in the other, even if the airline’s headline specifications look similar.

02A footrest helps only if the position suits your body

The standard-row United photograph places the screen and stowed table on the seatback ahead. A bulkhead seat has a different arrangement. More space in front may come with a screen or table stowed in the seat, so there is no universal “front row is best” rule.

Delta advertises widebody Premium Select with up to 38 inches of pitch, 19 inches of width and seven inches of recline. Pitch is the distance between corresponding points on rows, not clear knee space. Its current page also identifies narrowbody exceptions without the same footrest, leg rest or entertainment equipment. Those exceptions are a reason to verify the flight, not a reason to assume the photographs are wrong.

On an eastbound overnight flight, a short meal followed by several hours of rest may be the goal. If you need to lie flat to sleep, paying more for either recliner can leave the main problem unsolved. On a westbound daytime flight, the wider personal area may be useful throughout the journey.

03The seat and the ticket conditions are two separate purchases

Better meal presentation is part of the appeal, but it is a poor reason to expect Business Class. The photograph is useful for judging table space, rather than predicting a specific entrée. In firsthand reports, seat satisfaction and service satisfaction often differ; one does not establish the other.

Delta now presents Basic, Classic and Extra options within Premium Select. The physical seat can be the same while advance seat selection, cancellation treatment and mileage earning differ. In particular, Basic’s seat assignment after check-in is a material limitation if an adjacent pair is the reason for upgrading. Compare the fare conditions offered on your actual route rather than carrying an older review’s ticket rules forward.

Priority airport services also do not mean automatic lounge access. Delta’s table explicitly makes Sky Club access dependent on separate credentials. At United, check the applicable Club access or pass conditions for your ticket and airport; Premium Plus is not Polaris Business and does not become Polaris Lounge access.

04A $350 upgrade is $1,400 for two people returning

If the upgrade is offered per person and per direction, multiply before deciding whether it feels modest. You might prefer Premium Economy only on the daytime leg, where you will use the space, or only on the night flight, if you know you can rest in this kind of seat. The better choice depends on the journey rather than a fixed airline ranking.

Use all-in prices for the same travellers and comparable flexibility. An upgrade payment made after ticketing may have different refund rules from buying the cabin originally. When miles are offered, keep the mileage requirement and cash co-payment separate; an attractive advertised mileage figure is not evidence of available seats.
